Gaslight cafe chicago12/29/2023 ![]() It was a very good meal, and a very good visit, even though the French Chardonnay was no longer on the wine list. On this visit, there was almost no one in that lounge/bar area, other than a few folk picking up food to go - a very slow night, but with travel just recommencing, not surprising. Behind those areas, is a bar, with more table seating, plus a piano, with live music. On this visit, we were in one of the booths. On several occasions, my wife has held meetings there, and it has worked well. The restaurant is sectioned off, in that there is a dining area, just off of the hostess stand, which has regular tables, booths, and then a “board room” area. On this visit, beyond the gentleman at the front desk, who was also doing the duties as Sommelier, I did not recognize any staff, until the singer (the Lounge is to the rear of where we were seated) walked past. Service was very good, and our servers were all masked. ![]() We ended up taking some of each wine back to the room, for “breakfast,” as our flight out was a bit later in the morning. For the Main Course, I ordered the Grilled Tuna w/ grilled tomatoes, asparagus and a lemon-caper sauce - quite good My wife ordered the Veal Marsala w/ mashed potatoes and mushrooms, which was quite good, tender and flavorful. We split an order of the Fried Calamari, which was, as always, quite good, and especially so for being away from an ocean. While short, the wine list does have some nice options. Not sure if the Montrachet will make it back on the wine list, or if this is a permanent change? The stemware was a bit on the industrial side, but adequate for an airport hotel dining room. Unfortunately, it was not available, so I made do with the Hartford Court Land’s End Sonoma Pinot Noir, and the Ferrari-Carano Sonoma Coast Chardonnay. I had the short wine list quickly, and chose the Louis Latour Puligny-Montrachet ‘15. I find the lighting in the Gaslight Club to be a bit dim, but many would typify it as “romantic.” Still, I prefer a bit more light, over the table, than what is provided. We were promptly greeted by a gentleman, with whom we had interacted several times before, and were seated in one of the booths, in the main dining area. ![]() We had arrived earlier, so had time to unpack, before heading down to eat. After dinner my Mom and I went into the bar area and helped fill the pianists tip jar with requests for all the oldie goldies we could think of and sang along.Dinner at the Gaslight Club In August, we were doing another overnight at the Hilton O’Hare Airport Hotel, and I had booked the Gaslight Club for dinner. There were four of us, dinner and drinks (6) with tip (always pay tips in cash) was roughly $235. I had the house pinot noir which was fruity, light/medium bodies and went very well with the steak. ![]() I choose the spinach which had a smidge of onion and that was about it - rather blah, bacon would have helped. The choise was mashed potatoes, vegetables or spinach. The waitresses are a bit scantily dressed in the old style Vegas/Salon Gal outfits, but they have the figures, nothing is hanging out and they are fantastic waitresses and a few have nice voices! I had the filet mignon, must have been 6 oz., the knife (large and sharp) almost slipped thru it was that tender and cooked exactly as requested, medium. In the bar there is a grand piano on a small stage area for the pianist/singer (great guy, can't remember the name, been there for eons)and enough room the the waitress/singers to stand or hop onto the piano, I've seen both. The back area is a bit dark but quieter than the bar. I do not recommend the grill area to anyone that is sensitive to smoke due to the smoke from the grill. There are four dining areas, a muti functional area as you enter before the bar (choose booths or a semi-private room), in the bar, a back seating area that sits probably up to 30 with plenty of elbow room (booths and straightback chairs),there is an area overlooking the grill cooking area. Everytime I stay at the Hilton my Mom and I have dinner at this restaurant. ![]()
